Looking back over the last 10 years (in honor of WeddingWire’s 10th anniversary!), There are a few trends that we’re glad are on the wane (mason jars, we’re looking at you!). But there are actually some decades-old wedding trends that we’re ready to bring back – with a modern twist, of course!

Wedding color combinations

Then: Brown with orange pops

Now: Neutrals with bright pink pops

In 2007, the color palette for hot weddings always included chocolate brown. This neutral shade was frequently paired with bright orange flowers to add a bit of bright color to the look. Ten years later, this brighter neutral palette has been updated in a fresh and modern way, with creamier colors like taupe or tan paired with flowers that add a pop of color in shades of pink and fuchsia.

Wedding favors

Then: Donate on behalf of the guests to a charity selected by the couple

Now: Let Guests Choose Charity

Making a charitable donation on behalf of your wedding guests has been a mainstay of the wedding for years. In the past, couples have selected a charity that is meaningful to them, and have put up a sign notifying guests that a donation has been made. An updated twist on this is to donate to three different charities and allow guests to choose the one that resonates the most. You can do this by providing three boxes, each labeled with a charity name and description, and giving each guest a coin to slide into the box to indicate their choice.

Wedding dresses

Then: Bold color sash and details

Now: General patterns

Brides love the idea of accessorizing their wedding dresses with colors. In 2007, it was all about adding brightly colored sashes or embroidery to a dress that would match the wedding color scheme. In the years that followed, pastel-hued wedding dresses became a mainstay of runways and aisles alike (we love wedding dresses!). What’s new in wedding dresses? Patterns! As we move into 2021, we predict we’ll see a lot more flowers, watercolors, and other prints on wedding dresses (check out even more wedding dress trends at the New York Bridal Market!).

Hand desserts for weddings

Then: cupcakes

Now: Donuts

We don’t want to replace wedding cakes, but we are definitely seeing couples adding even more candy to their spreads. In 2007, cupcakes took the wedding world by storm. Today, donuts lead the pack, but really, who’s going to hate any kind of dessert?

Online Wedding Planning

Then: Wedding Websites

Now: Wedding websites, wedding hashtags, snapchat geofilters …

Ten years ago, couples were starting to use the Internet as a resource for their wedding planning (enter WeddingWire, natch!). Some couples had wedding websites, and maybe they could post a photo or two on Facebook. How times have changed! Now, having a wedding website is an absolute wedding planning necessity, and a wedding hashtag is essential for all Instagram posts – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. From custom Snapchat filters to live weddings on Facebook, who knows how technology and social media will change weddings ten years from now?

Green weddings

Then: Ecological “themed” weddings

Now: Ecological as a way of life

In 2007, being “green” was considered a wedding theme as was “rustic,” “glamorous,” or “carnival.” Today, couples are more subtle about being environmentally friendly by incorporating local food or flowers, donating or repurposing decoration items, using recycled paper in invitations, or providing transportation for guests to save energy.

Wedding cakes

Then: Monogram Wedding Cakes

Now: Calligraphy Cake Toppers

The year 2007 was just the beginning of the monogram craze, and the idea of wedding branding has spread ever since. When it comes to wedding cakes, we frequently saw emblazoned monogrammed wedding cakes in the confectionery itself (along with many other details). Ten years later, and we’re looking at simple wedding cakes with personalized toppers with the couple’s monogram or their names. Not only are they so pretty, but they also make a fabulous keepsake!
